Queensland was the sixth and final Australian colony to be created when it formally separated from New South Wales on 10 December 1859.
Queensland′s first flag was adopted 11 years later, and showed a profile portrait of Queen Victoria on a blue disc, surrounded by a white annulus on which the word "Queensland" appeared in gold.
The symbolism of this design is simple – it honours Queen Victoria after whom Queensland was named.
