Show Designer's Description
The Kangaroo in my Australian flag Design is a symbol that primarily represents national identity and progress, as the animal cannot easily move backwards. The large seven-pointed Commonwealth Star represents the six states and the territories, while the five stars of the Southern Cross constellation (four seven-pointed, one five-pointed) to signify Australia's, geographical location and indigenous heritage.
Show Designer's Description
Design retains the southern Cross in same position as existing flag. SC is significant as the Eureka miners fought under it and as such were instrumental in establishing an Australian democracy. Mast side is ochre earth as the dominant colour of our outback. Black recognises our first nations people who occupied this country for up to 60,000 years. The kangaroo image is the most recognisable symbol of Australia by overseas visitors. Image is same as that on RAAF roundel since 1956 which was a copy from 1938 penny coin. Canada has its maple leaf on its aircraft roundel as well as on its flag.
