The Advance Australia Flag.
This design combines already familiar elements of national symbolism with solid design principles, creating an instantly recognisable Australian flag.
The central motif of chevrons embodies the spirit of “Advance Australia” representing progress, with the national colours of green and gold representing “nature’s gifts” and the “wealth for toil” respectively. These are set against a blue background, representing the borderless potential of the wide open skies and deep blue seas that surround Australia. When displayed vertically (with the hoist at the bottom), the chevrons and star beneath them also form the letter “A” for Australia.
The stars on the flag are the same seven-pointed Commonwealth Stars of the existing flag. The star at the hoist represents the unity of Australia, with the three stars on the fly representing the three origins of her people - Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and immigrants from all nations. Together, all four stars form the horizontal shape of the Southern Cross in the night sky.
The Advance Australia Flag is a symbol of a proud, independent and sovereign nation. It conveys the forward-looking spirit of Australia, and the aspiration of her people to move towards reconciliation and unite behind a shared sense of national identity.
