This flag design is for an Australian Republic. The Union Jack and Commonwealth Star in the hoist of the existing flag have been replaced with a globally recognisable uniquely Australian icon, a kangaroo, white on a red field. Australians strongly identify with the southern cross in the fly of the existing flag. It has been retained in this design.
The white chevron flanked by red and blue fields preserves links to the flag of the Anzacs and over 120 years of Federation and Constitutional Monarchy.
The kangaroo, red field, white chevron, blue field and southern cross evoke the sense Australians have of their place on the planet, a largely dry, red continent and shoreline with unique fauna surrounded by ocean.
An identical design with Australia's sporting colours, green and gold, is readily obtained by substituting a gold kangaroo and gold chevron with white southern cross stars on green fields in both the hoist and fly.
