The uniforms of our international sporting teams are green & gold (colours derived from our National floral symbol, the wattle). And our athletes should have a green & gold National flag to match.
The proposed design is all green & gold, and features:
• green ground with gold stripes, top and bottom;
• Southern Cross of gold stars at the upper left hoist;
• gold kangaroo at the lower centre of the flag.
The primary symbol is the Southern Cross – the historic symbol of Australian nationalism.
The secondary symbol is a kangaroo – the foremost symbol of Australian identity, known globally. The kangaroo is styled on the RAAF roundel. Gold is a plausible colour for a kangaroo, whereas green better suits an amphibian or reptile.
The gold stripes cause the flag to stand out. Otherwise, a green flag tends to merge with the background. The ratio by area of green to gold of the design is 69:31. In flight, the flag will present flashes of gold over green, like a bough of flowering wattle rippling in the breeze.
