Flag Proportion: 2:3
The third placed design in Ausflag′s 1993 design competition for a new Australian flag, above, was from Tony Burton of Milsons Point in Sydney.
Tony Burton is a professional flag designer, and was awarded $4000 from the prizemoney pool. The flag above is a selected modification of Tony Burton′s original design presented in proportions 1:2.
The white central square represents one home for all, stretching from sea to sea, under the Southern Cross. The blue and white colours were inspired by the Eureka Flag and the flag of Federation.
Flag Proportion: 2:3
Another of Tony Burton's designs was placed equal third, totally unbeknown to the judges that the two entries were by the same designer.
This other design (above) is a variation of Aboriginal flag. The black stripe is replaced by a navy blue, and separated from the red stripe by a thin central horizontal white stripe, with a large gold disc in the centre of the flag.
This is also a flag design inspired by the themes of reconciliation between the settler cultures and the indigenous people of Australia.
