Vale Sir Richard Kirby
Sir Richard Kirby, a former Ausflag chairman, died in Sydney on Thursday 25 October 2001.
Sir Richard was Ausflag Chairman from 1990 to 1996 and then our Patron until his death. Sir Richard was also the inaugural president of the Australian Conciliation and Arbitration Commission from 1956 until his retirement in 1973. He was one of the great figures of Australia's industrial arbitration system and played a key role in making many national wage rulings for workers over three decades.
Ausflag salutes Sir Richard and his tireless efforts in helping us and being an ambassador for our cause.
Vale Mr. Djerrkura
Former ATSIC leader and Ausflag Director, Mr. Djerrkura, tragically died from a suspected heart attack in a hospital in the Northern Territory's East Arnhem Land on 26 May 2004. He was only 54.
In line with Aboriginal custom, Mr. Djerrkura's family requested that neither his first Aboriginal name nor image not be published.
He devoted his life to the advancement of indigenous Australians, and was awarded the Medal in the General Division of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 1984 for service to the Aboriginal community.
He joined the Ausflag Board in July 1997, pointing out that "To the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, the Union Jack is a constant reminder of oppression, domination, genocide and dispossession". |
