A Letter from the Public Interest Advocacy Centre

Dear Mr Scruby

Thank you for your letter bringing to our attention your concern regarding the voting rights of English citizens.

We would like to inform you that we are presently preparing a brief for a barrister in relation to this issue. The advice which we will be seeking is whether section 93(1)(b) of the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 is vulnerable to challenge on the basis of inconsistency with section 10(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth). We will also be asking for advice on the characteristics of an ideal applicant seeking to challenge section 93(1)(b).

We will be liaising with the Ethnic Communities Council regarding the development of this matter in future.

Yours sincerely
Public Interest Advocacy Centre
